Gregson Brass Plaque

The brass plaque is dedicated to Lancelot Allgood Gregson, a member of the family who have been great benefactors of this church. The son of John Gregson of Murton and Burdon and Bramham House in Yorkshire. Born 1840 and educated at Rugby and Sandhurst, he adopted a military career, joining the 26th Cameronians serving with his regiment in the Abyssinian Campaign. Passing through Staff College,in 1865 he was appointed to General Beatson’s Staff in India, subsequently holding for 10years various appointments in the War Office eventually retiring D.A.O.M.G in 1888 Colonel Gregson married Sophia Jane Beauchamp [1834-1913] daughter, of Mr Robert Buchanan, of Ardoch Dunbartonshire on December 26th 1868 in St Peters Church Fort William, Calcutta India. They had one daughter Sophie Isabella born 1871. Following his retirement from the Army in 1888, succeeded his father in the family estates in 1879 the Colonel lived the life of a country gentleman at Burdon Hall, his north country seat surrounded by the family estates, comprising over 20 farms. The Gregson estate stretched from Tunstall Hills, to South Hetton touching the villages of Tunstall, Burdon, Seaton, Dalton le Dale, Murton. During his occupancy of Burdon Hall he had done much for the tenancy in the way of rebuilding and improving farmsteads
